Close on the heels of the high-profile Jiah Khan suicide case, a 22-year-old aspiring model, Pallavi Jha (in pic), who also worked as a film editor, committed suicide at her rented home in Adarsh Nagar, Oshiwara, on Sunday night.

Based on the complaint filed by the deceased’s mother, the police have booked her ex-boyfriend for abetment to suicide and are investigating the case. No arrests have been made yet.

Jha was engaged to a 28-year-old Delhi based man, Shailendra Sharma. The couple were in a relationship for over five years and got engaged last year in November. However, soon after the engagement Sharma’s family started demanding money from Jha. She couldn’t take any more demands from Sharma and called off her engagement. She filed criminal cases under Section 420 for cheating and 376 for rape against Sharma, who is unemployed.

An officer from Oshiwara police station said, “Shailendra’s family members demanded a flat, a car and Rs 20 lakh, which was not possible for Jha to arrange for.” Later Jha moved to Mumbai.

Officials from Oshiwara police station stated that Jha lived in Adarsh Nagar with a male friend, Jaisingh Kasana, also a film editor. She moved to Mumbai two months ago and was working with a television serial as a video editor.

On Sunday night when her flatmate Kasana returned home, he found Jha hanging from a ceiling fan. He informed the neighbours, who helped him break open the door and informed the police about the incident. Pallavi’s mother, Vandana Jha landed in Mumbai on Monday morning. A case has been filed against Shailendra based on a statement given by Vandana. She blamed Shailendra for harassing her daughter to take back the cases registered in Delhi.

The autopsy was conducted at Cooper hospital and the body was given to the family for the final rites. Police have not arrested Shailendra and action will be taken after thorough investigation of the case.u00a0
