Over 3.25 lakh papers yet to be evaluated; senior MU professor puts in papers saying varsity doesn't know how to respect its teachers; students support him

It's official now. The Mumbai University (MU) has failed to meet the Governor's July 31 deadline to declare results of 477 examinations. According sources from the varsity, over 3.25 lakh papers are yet to be evaluated, of which 2.5 lakh are from the commerce stream. While students wait for results of 324 examinations, all eyes are now on the V-C, whose resignation has been sought by many for missing the final deadline for declaring results.

Incidentally, MU registrar MA Khan had said on Sunday that varsity officials would work through the night to announce the results today. In a statement issued late last night, the varsity had said, "In most streams, over 90 per cent of the evaluation is done. Around 55 results are ready to be declared in Monday. We have taken the help of Nagpur, Pune, Aurangabad and Kolhapur universities for assessment work. University will soon finish assesment of remaining 3,25,305 answer-sheets.
Professor vents ire
Adding to the woes of the varsity administration, several senior professors and faculty members have come out in the open criticising MU's mode of functioning. Senior Economics department professor, Dr Neeraj Hatekar, has announced his voluntary retirement on a social media platform. He said, "MU does not respect its teachers. It is the varsity's way of functioning and the problematic technical process that marred evaluation work. But the varsity appointed Officer on Special Duty (OSD) for evaluation work is issuing threats to teachers to finish up. Now, the V-C tells me that the OSD is upset with my Facebook post and has, consequently, stopped working. I don't want students to suffer, so I met the OSD and requested him to get back to work. But the V-C, on Sunday, went ahead and rejected all my claims as false and said I had apologised to the varsity."
Student support
Student organisations have come out in support for When Dr Hatekar's decision and started a social media campaign #StandWithHatekarSir, in protest against the varsity. Sagar Bhalerao, vice-president of the Chatra Bharati said, "The varsity failed its students but is blaming the teachers. We won't let this continue."
Dr Vinayak Dalvie, the OSD for evaluation work, remained unavailable for comment.
