Riding on Gaurika Shetty's brace, Arya Vidya Mandir, Juhu (AVM) beat Bombay Scottish (Mahim) 3-0 to win the Mumbai Schools Sports Association (MSSA)-organised girls Under-16 Division I title for the first time at Cooperage football ground on Saturday.

Both sides played an attacking game right from the word go.

AVM opened the scoring in the fifth minute, when forward Gaurika scored off an assist from Khushi Khan. In the 18th minute, Gaurika scored again after she received a pass from Khushi. At half-time, AVM were leading 2-0.

On resumption, the Juhu outfit were awarded a penalty kick after a foul, committed within the penalty area by opposition defender Saloni Shah. It was AVM skipper Anagha Janakkiraman who powered the shot into the net during the 50th minute, as the agile goalkeeper Saachi Kamat was unable to block it.

Anagha's tactics seemed justified as the whole AVM unit stuck to their game plan and the formation of 4-3-3, while the Mahim team lost the plot early on and were never able to recover.

"This is our first win in the Under-16 category as last year we came third. The team kept it very simple and played according to their strengths," AVM coach Desmond
D'Souza told mid-day.

Meanwhile, AVM skipper Anagha credited the team's hard work and dedication for being able to emerge winners.

"It has been clear hard work and dedication which has helped us in the tournament. We set ourselves a high bench mark, which we achieved," said Anagha.

Earlier in the day, a brace by mid-fielder Valencia D'mello and a goal from forward Samara D'souza helped Mary Immaculate Girls (Borivli) beat Apostolic Carmel (Bandra) 3-0 in the third-place tie held at the same venue.
