The next time a person tries to get details of your debit card, claiming that he/she is a bank employee, you might want to verify their identity before shooting your mouth off. A 20-year-old BMC employee learnt his lesson the hard way.

Bharat Jogadia, who works for the BMC, ended up losing his entire month's salary after he fell prey to a phone scam. In his complaint with the Dongri police, Jogadia said that on July 6, he received a call from an unknown number. "When I answered the call, the caller told me that he was calling from the bank, where I have my salary account. He told me that my ATM card had been blocked and a few details were needed to renew the card," Jogadia said.

The caller then asked the victim for his debit card details. An unsuspecting Jogadia was forthcoming with all the details. After the caller disconnected, he got a transaction alert of R25,000. Next morning, when I rushed to the bank and questioned the staff about it, they told me it was a phone scam," he said.

Jogadia filed a complaint with the Dongri police station. When contacted, a police official said, "A complaint has been received and the case is being probed."
