The concept of Wildlife Week was instituted by the Indian Board of Wildlife with a view to create awareness about preservation of fauna in India. Wildlife Week is all about celebrating and working towards conservation of the wildlife in India. The Bombay Natural History Society aims to conserve wildlife through mediums of research, education and field trips.


The Wildlife Week celebrations at BNHS this year will begin with release of a documentary on the Great Indian Bustard on October 3 at 6:00 pm at the Hornbill House, Mumbai. This release function will be followed by interactive sessions on alternate days throughout the Wildlife Week till October 9.

October 3: Releasing the documentary on Great Indian Bustard
The documentary, produced by BNHS and Office of the Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife) Pune, focuses on creating awareness about the Critically Endangered bird Great Indian Bustard. Sunil Limaye, Chief Conservator of Forests, Pune will grace the function as Chief Guest along with Dr Asad Rahmani, Senior Scientific Advisor, BNHS. Screening of the documentary will be followed by a talk on the Great Indian Bustard from a renowned ornithologist Dr Asad Rahmani who has extensively worked on ecology of bustard.
Time: 6:00 pm

October 5: 'Exploring the Living World with BNHS'
Join the BNHS experts at this interactive session ‘Exploring the Living World with BNHS’ to know about the camps BNHS organizes and their experiences. Listen to stories and experiences from our experts who have been organizing nature camps since many years. The hour long session will begin at 6:00 pm at the Hornbill House, Mumbai.

October 7: Introduction to the flying jewels
This is your chance to indulge in butterflies with the Butterflyman of India Mr. Isaac Kehimkar. Join in for information, interesting facts and more on butterflies with BNHS. The Butterflyman is set to talk about his upcoming publication ‘Butterflies of India’ for the first time. Kehimkar will also be addressing the audience’s questions and queries after a short talk on the butterflies of India. This indoor session will be followed by a butterfly walk in Ovalekar Wadi on 9thOctober, for which the registrations will be open during the talk.
Time: 6:00 pm.

October 9: Chase the Butterflies with the Butterflyman of India
Join the Butterflyman of India, Isaac Kehimkar to visit one of the open-air butterfly gardens near Mumbai, teeming with several species of stunning butterflies. Seek out beautifully patterned caterpillars and learn about the lifecycle of these winged jewels.

Reporting: Bus will leave from Dadar T.T. (near Chandu Halwai) at 07:00 a.m., Chembur (near Diamond Garden) at 07:20 a.m., and Thane (Cadbury Jn.) at 07:40 a.m.
Charges: Rs. 800/- for members, Rs. 900/- for others (includes transport and BNHS expertise only).
