Sonu Nigam invited the wrath of Twitter trolls as he questioned the use of loudspeakers at places of worship. The singer called for an end to "forced religiousness' referring to inconvenience faced due to Azaan recital (Muslim call to worship) near his residence.

As the tweet snowballed into a debate, he tweeted last afternoon, "Dear everyone. Your stand exposes your own IQ. I stand by my statement that loudspeakers should not be allowed in mosques and temples. Period (sic)."
When mid-day reached out to Sonu, he simply said, "I have said what I had to. The rest is for the world to decipher."
In one of his first few posts on Monday, he wrote, "I'm not a Muslim and I have to be woken up by the Azaan in the morning. When will this forced religiousness end in India? And by the way, Mohammed did not have electricity when he made Islam."
However, given that he had expressed anger over excessive noise, he added: "I don't believe in any temple or gurudwara using electricity to wake up people, who don't follow the religion".
The Twitteratti was divided in opinion, with those in favour of banning high-decibel broadcasts citing the August 2016 Bombay High Court order that directed noise pollution in religious places be controlled in accordance with silence zone norms. It includes not using loudspeaker in such areas.
Singers Shaan and Kailash Kher showed support to Sonu. Film editor-writer Apurva Asrani said, "Ban all loudspeakering of religion."
Those unable to decipher why someone who has often conducted social experiments to break barriers, including posing as a beggar as he belted out tracks on the streets to highlight societal perception, questioned Sonu's "negative" rant.
While some raised objections to his jagrata performances, which also involve the use of loudspeakers, others pulled out a dated video of Priyanka Chopra narrating her love for the Azaan.
