Jordan Spieth remained clear of the field at the British Open on Saturday as a strong start to his third round left him nine under par for the championship at the turn.

Spieth, who was six-under overnight, picked up three birdies on the front nine at Royal Birkdale, at the 3rd, 7th and 8th holes. Matt Kuchar, who started the day in second place at four-under and went out with Spieth in the last pairing, also went out in three-under-par 31 to go to -7 overall.

US Open champion Brooks Koepka was two-under through the front nine as he climbed to -5 for the championship. Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy picked up birdies at three of the first five holes but dropped shots at the 7th and the 8th before recording a double-bogey six at the 10th to sit at one-under overall.
