A team of south Delhi police that had gone to nab an auto-lifter in Naraina area was reportedly held hostage and thrashed by aides of the miscreant. The 10-member team reportedly called the police control room (PCR) several times, seeking help. They were rescued after cops from the local police station and PCR personnel reached the spot.

The incident occurred in Naraina Village at around noon on Sunday. A highly-placed police source posted in south Delhi confirmed the incident. "Station house officer (SHO) of Kotla Mubarakpur had a tip-off that a man involved in auto-lifting and other criminal cases is hiding in Naraina Village area of southwest Delhi. Immediately a team was formed to conduct a raid," said the police official. The official said that the team had succeeded to nab the accused from the area but he called his aides for help.u00a0u00a0u00a0

"Around fifty local people gathered at the spot and they asked the police to set the accused free. The team refused to act upon the 'advice' and their argument turned ugly. The mob then did not let the police go and attacked them. The cops were thrashed with sticks and bamboos. When the police found themselves surrounded they called the PCR and local cops for help," said the source.

The official added that the police team was rescued by local cops and PCR personnel and were rushed to AIIMS trauma centre for treatment. "The cops who suffered injuries were identified as sub-inspector Satish, constable Naresh, Nishal Kumar, Anand Jha and another constable Satish Kumar. Out of the five cops SI Satish was most seriously injured," said the police source.

A senior police official from Naraina said that they will lodge an FIR for the attack on the police team after getting a formal complaint from Kotla Mubarakpur police. "Two FIRs can be lodged - the one for attacking the police team will be at Naraina police station and another at Kotla Mubarakpur against the accused," said the source. The DCP of south Delhi was contacted by this reporter but she was not available for comments.
