Half way through 2017, we pick four indie bands that are making all the right noises in Mumbai's gig itinerary

Paradigm Shift
Paradigm Shift's influences range from Mahavishnu Orchestra to Tool

(Alt/Indian Classical)
They love Carnatic melodies and believe in concept albums. In 2012, they released their first album, Coalescence. Come September, the second one will be out. "It is a prequel to Coalescence and is titled Sammukh (standing in front of someone). The album is being mixed and mastered at The Audio Master Studios in London," says vocalist Kaushik Ramachandran. Paradigm Shift rose to fame in 2012 with a cover of AR Rahman's Roja, but today, they have a bag full of catchy originals like Banjaara and Dhuaan.

Daira (Alternative Rock)
If you've heard a Blues version of Sheila Ki Jawani on YouTube, you already know of Daira's musical prowess. Born in 2014, it was also rated one of the top five bands in India by Sennheiser last year. "Currently, we are working on the production of our second album. Sahaafi, one of our new songs, was previewed in the web-series, Overtones, recently," says band manager Savi Shrivastava, adding, "We also plan to release a documentary of our recent Manali tour."

Insignia (Blues Rock)
Formed in 2011, the band would spend hours commuting from Thane to the Western suburbs for gigs. Their effort came to fruition when the video of their song Paranoid City was aired on television recently. "Watching it right after the likes of Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber is weirdly comforting," says Harikesh Shekhar (vocals and guitar). They now plan to launch their debut EP. "We will hit the studio in August. The new songs are more complex, so we roped in a musician friend, Nishant Nair (guitar/piano)?for a few tracks."

The Minerva Conduct (Progressive Metal)
They are grungy, angry and all that is expected of a Metal band. But what sets them apart is their ear for melody in between the deadly riffs. Formed in 2014, the band is an instrumental brainchild of guitarist Prateek Rajagopal. They recently finished recording their self-titled debut album. Vile, a new single released this week, is an adrenaline boost. "The highlight about our music is the electronic section, Death Metal parts and ambient sounds," says Rajagopal. Also, watch out for Metanoia.
