Metal heads can groove to city band Tripp Pilots’ originals and covers of Porcupine Tree and Tool

Mumbai musical nights: Tripp Pilots to perform at a gig tonight

When Metallica's maiden gig in India (Gurgaon) in 2011 got canned due to security issues, the ticket rates for the next stop soared in record time. A group of youngsters from Mumbai bought tickets worth Rs. 3,000 to attend the Bengaluru concert. The experience transformed their outlook towards music. Today, they are better known as Tripp Pilots, one of the few Alternative Metal acts in the city. The five-piece band will promote their originals and play interesting covers at a gig tonight.

"We had already started writing songs back then, but the idea of a full-fledged band never occurred to us before we attended the concert. We had never seen an international band in action. The vibe at the concert helped us realise that we can actually do what they were doing on stage; performing at an arena full of people is what we had dreamt of," says Sunil Menon, the vocalist and one of the guitarists.

When the boys started taking their instruments seriously, they didn't stick to any genre. The sound got fixed much later. They found their way through Struggler, one of their popular tracks, with crunchy guitar riffs and locked drums and bass. The music video, with fight sequences, is imbued with extreme Metal sentiments. "We started getting better with more rehearsals and gigs," adds the 31-year-old.

Apart from Struggler, they will play tracks like Compassion, Sabotage and On The Cards. "All the songs are about self awareness. Struggler is about life pressures. Sabotage is also on a similar theme, about how life acts tough and tries to sabotage you," says Menon.

The band is also an ardent fan of Porcupine Tree and Tool — two of the most technical groups in the history of Alternative Rock, and hence, translating their sound at a live gig can be a challenge. "I use a POD processor, the other guitar player has an analogue set-up of single units, which helps us produce that sound. We are covering songs like Open Cars and The Pot," he shares.

Though they are a Metal band, the vocals are clean. "Alternative Metal isn't overtly aggressive. We also listen to a lot of Progressive Rock to balance our sound," says Menon.

The band is currently busy recording their debut EP, which they aim to release by the end of the year. "We will also be launching our website along with the EP."
