Daddy Cool - Movie Review

What it's about: When producer Indra Kumar (known for his toilet humour) and director K Murli Mohan Rao (known for his over-the-top potboilers) attempt to make a comedy, you kind of have an idea of the disaster that's in store. And when it's an official remake of the 2007 British black comedy, Death At A Funeral, all hell is bound to break loose (in your brain).

Daddy Cool is about the madness that unfolds in the drawing room of a house in Goa at the funeral of a family patriarch. It explores relationships and the meaning of being a family, despite all the obvious faults and skeletons in the closet.

What's hot:
Black comedies are not a genre often attempted or successful in Hindi cinema. So it's a brave attempt. Producers Ashok Thakeria and Inder Kumar have made light comedy films, and it was interesting when they decided to adapt an English film. Though you wish they'd picked and adapted a massy entertainer instead.

What's not: Death At A Funeral isn't a great subject anyways. It is full of some forced and adolescent scatological humor.u00a0 But having picked it, the director should have stuck to the original story.

But he adds bits (Sophie Choudry track), adapts the film (making the whole gay dead father track ridiculous) and then wraps the film with a big dose of emotion (we are Indians, so we need rona- dhona). All the fresh inputs just dilute the impact.

Everything was readymade and they still spoil it. The script, the screenplay and the shot break-ups it's all amateurish.

All the director had to do was get a crew together on location and aim the camera. And yet, the result is nowhere close to the original neither in terms of laughs, performances or drama.

For a comedy film, this one relies on jokes like a funeral service called Coffin With Karan; a starlet saying to a man at the funeral, "Let's do it." and gags that are a decade old (think Dada Kondke).

Aftab Shivdasani delivers the most irritating performance of his career. He plays the character of a stoned guy and ends up looking like a mentally retarded person.u00a0

What to do: Buy your Daddy a cool beer, and enjoy that instead of this one.
