A 25-year-old man who worked in a roadside kiosk near the Delhi Police headquarters was killed when he was hit by a speeding car and pierced by a divider grille he was thrown on to, police said on Sunday.

Police said the incident occurred at around 11 p.m. Saturday when Kundan Yadav, who worked at a juice shop, was crossing the road about 100 metres from the Delhi Police HQ as he was going to feed poor people who sleep at the footpath.

"The speeding car, which appeared to be a white colour Audi hit him from side. With the impact of collision, Yadav tossed up and iron grilles installed at the road divider pierced his chest and abdomen. He died on the spot," a senior police officer said.

However witnesses said Yadav cried out in pain and shouted for help but police reached the spot only after 15 minutes when the driver sped away.

"Police have registered a case against an unknown man and are trying to identify the registration number of car to arrest the accused driver. The CCTV footage to leading roads are being examined to get positive leads in the case," the officer added.

A native of Bihar, Yadav was working at the ITO area from last couple of years and had made its daily practice to food poor footpath-dwellers.
