Diljit Dosanjh: Bollywood happened by accident

Q. You have two back-to-back releases — 'Udta Punjab' this Friday and your Punjabi film, 'Sardaarji 2' next week. Do you think your Bollywood debut will benefit the other film in terms of collections?
A. If it happens, good thing. But I am an actor and don't think much about collections.

Q. This is the first time that a Punjabi film is being promoted so extensively.
A. And this is the first time I am interacting with Mumbai media here for a Punjabi film. We don't get much screens or shows in Mumbai, Kanpur and other places. It is important to take the Punjab film industry out of the state for its prosperity.

Q. But for that, shouldn't it focus on stronger concepts like Marathi cinema is doing now?
A. Absolutely. Right now, people there are going with a particular success formula. If one film of a certain genre does well, everyone starts making the same kind of films. But, eventually, things will change for good.

Q. Did you have Bollywood aspirations?
A. Bollywood and, in fact, acting happened by accident. I was a musician. But, luckily, offers kept coming in and I took up acting. I will work hard to sustain my demand.

Q. Were you apprehensive about Udta Punjab getting caught in such a controversy?
A. Honestly, no. All I can say now is that we have fought and can present the film the way we wanted to.

Q. How has shooting for a Hindi film been different from your usual experience of working in Punjabi films?
A. People in Punjab also work with the same dedication and intensity. But the team here is much more experienced and so, one learns many new things just by being around such people.

Q. Do you feel you need to work on your Hindi to get more offers here?
A. Yes, language is something that I need to work on.

Q. What do you think of the music scenario?
A. Production houses have almost stopped investing in albums as there is no physical sale. People download songs online, mostly pirated. I feel stringent laws should be in place to curb piracy.
