My girlfriend wanted to date someone rich, so when she found out that I was single and came from a well-off family, she began to entice me and send me all kinds of messages. We dated for a few months, during which I lavished her with gifts, took her to fancy restaurants and even took her on a holiday abroad. She soon grew tired of me though, and eventually broke up with me. I found out later that she had ditched me for the son of a famous businessman, which has made me so angry that I don’t think I can trust anyone ever again. How do I get out of this? How can I change the way I feel about women again? I know she is not the norm, but she tricked me every step of the way. I am an intelligent person, but if someone can fool me so easily, I am beginning to doubt myself.
What should I do?
The fact that you recognise how ridiculous it is to paint everyone with the same brush is a good thing, because it means you will get out of this phase soon enough. For every woman who has supposedly conned a man into a relationship, there’s a rich man who has conned a number of women into dating him, so let’s not get onto our high horses and start believing that all men from well-off families are saints. The thing to do is avoid labelling anyone, because you can’t say what someone is really like until you spend some quality time with them. If your heart is broken, time will fix it. You will also find someone who likes you for who you are, rather than what you earn, because these things happen too. Give it time and your animosity towards everyone will go away.
Also consider yourself lucky to not be in a relationship with someone who doesn’t care about you anymore, and probably never did in the first place.
