Emraan mast mast hai!

Who says bad boys don't score? Certainly not Emraan Hashmi, who's made a career out of wicked. Basking in the success of his latest flick, Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai, the man who's played a con man, blackmailer, gangster, bookie in a film too many, talks about how it pays to be evil and unconventional.u00a0u00a0u00a0

Grey is good

Well, there is a darker side to every human being. And my playing grey characters has a lot to do with the kind of films I am offered. I don't get stereotypical roles. Today, the definition of a hero has changed. He is no longer an idealistic or a moralistic guy. Scripts too have evolved from the usual ones with 'happy endings'. I enjoy playing grey characters as they are more real, edgy and challenging to portray.u00a0

A bit of luck

The success of OUATIM means a lot to the entire team. A period gangster film was a risky proposition. But I have always chosen by instinct. The way I see it, the odds were against me, as I don't have the chocolate boy or Greek God looks. But I was lucky to get a certain amount of acceptability with the kind of roles I essayed on screen. That worked positively for me. Also, over a period of time, filmmakers have come to me with strong roles that have given me enough scope to display my acting chops. Even though the characters haven't been the stereotypical ones, I guess I have fared well (smiles).u00a0

Maintaining a low profile

Though people feel that I maintain a low profile, I beg to differ. Yes, it's true I avoid filmy parties or social dos, but this is because I like to spend time with family and close friends. But I don't spare any effort to promote my films once they reach the publicity stage. You will see me all over the place then (laughs). I feel that's enough. I don't like over-exposure. When I am working on a film; I slog for it and then I head home to my family.

Driven by instinct

I have never planned or worked on a strategy for my career. If I like a script or a character, I say yes. I don't believe in judging a director/producer by his last hit or flop. Likewise, I don't have a list of dream directors I would like to work with. Of course, there are many people whom I admire and respect for their body of work; but there are no icons for me (smiles).
