According to the Property Cell of the Mumbai Crime Branch, 36-year-old Vikas Anne from Vijaywada in Andhra Pradesh, spent the booty to put up at luxury hotels including Royal Palms hotel in Goregaon, Red Fox in Jaipur and service apartments in Bengaluru.

The accused, a BE Telecommunications engineer, had promised to loan his victim R6 crore to set up a green technology business. The victim, who had worked in IT companies in the Gulf, African cities as well as Afghanistan, wished to move back to India.

“The complainant needed a fund of Rs 2.5 crore to start his own business. He came across Anne, who said he had Federal Bank of India bonds worth 500 million dollar ( approximately Rs 3,200 crore),” said Joint commissioner of police, Crime Branch, Atulchandra Kulkarni.

Around mid-January this year, the victim met Anne at Royal Palms Hotel in Goregoan. “During the meeting, Anne told the complainant that instead of giving him Rs 2.5 crore, he would loan him Rs 6 crore in a week's time. He offered to fix his bonds with a bank, that would leave him with interest that he would then loan to the victim at the cost of processing fees,” said Dinkar Bhosale, senior police inspector of the Property Cell.

Anne started demanding money from the complainant to process the bank loan. When no money came his way, he realised something was wrong and approached the police.

“After an FIR was lodged, we traced the accused, who was put up at Red Fox hotel in Jaipur,” said Nitin Patil, assistant police inspector of the Property Cell branch.

“He will be produced in holiday court today. We will seek his custody to recover the money,” said assistant police inspector Laxmikant Salunke.
