The 73-year-old, whose total of 2,069 victims (1818 catches and 251 stumpings) is the most by a wicketkeeper, took his chance when he finally got to be England number one after years in the shadow of the formidable Alan Knott.

Usually bedecked with a white beach hat and the flap turned up he made his test debut in 1971 but it wasn't until Knott defected to Kerry Packer's World Series cricket in 1977 that he was at last given a run in the side.

Taylor -- nicknbamed 'Chat' -- eventually appeared in 57 Tests and 27 ODIs for England, and was one of cricket bible Wisden's players of the year in 1977.

"Artistry - there is no other word for it - behind the stumps has long illumined even the darkest hours of Derbyshire cricket," opined Wisden. Derbyshire chairman Chris Grant said that all at the club were thinking of Taylor and his family.

"Bob is a legend of the game," said Derbyshire chairman Chris Grant. "Bob has been a tremendous supporter of cricket in the county following his retirement from the game.

"We have passed on the best wishes of everyone associated with Derbyshire County Cricket Club and the county's cricket communities to his wife Cathy and his family and will continue to hold them in our thoughts."
