Fashion: Guide on how to perfect the jacket look

So what if winter temperatures in the city don't drop enough for you to pull out that fur coat? Sport the jacket look and create your own faux winter wardrobe. "Jackets, coats and blazers are accessories that can completely change your look or add that extra oomph. Mumbai weather, however, is constantly at odds with this particular fashion statement. Having lived in Mumbai all my life, I have learnt a few tricks to incorporate my favourite silhouette to my wardrobe," says designer and stylist Bhoomika Chouhan.

"Team up your jackets with a basic tee for the top or slim leggings/skirts. Avoid layering too much, especially in the day. Best way to truly look edgy and fashionable is to just drape the jacket on your shoulders instead of actually wearing it," she adds.

Fashion blogger, Kavya D'Souza, agrees. "Stick to easy and light fabrics that give you the right amount of warmth. Cotton or linen-based trench coats look fabulous as they recreate the feel of an international winter but are actually quite breezy. Faux leather jackets, which are light and non-fussy, make for the ideal pick for winter nights. They are perfect to layer over your New Year Eve's outfit, she advises, adding, "For the day, stick to super casual layering in knits or rayon to work the trick. Depending on the style and fabric, you could get the breezy cardigans for as cheap as Rs 500 going up to Rs 3,000. The faux leather variety would cost about Rs 4,000."

The stylists suggest a few winter styles to try out.

A cotton or linen-based trench coat looks fabulous as it recreates the feel of an international winter but is actually quite light and breezy. It works for meetings as well as work trips. Wear it over your tank tops and bell bottoms for a '70s twist.

For a casual look, a kimono-style, reversible jacket goes well with a formal bodycon dress, a white or pink crop top, or a gunjee and denim shorts. For a party, try a red short dress and strappy heels with the jacket draped on your shoulders. It works as a zip up dress too.

Faux leather jackets that are light and non-fussy make for the ideal pick for winter nights and are perfect to layer over your New Year Eve outfit for that extra edge. Pair them with coloured denims and a casual tee for a style upgrade. It also works well for road trips.

Blazers are an absolute staple and ditching the usual cream and black for a white can make all the difference. Team it with your playsuits or crop tops (since Mumbai winter always allows for a bit of skin show). Frayed and distressed denims work well to add that casual feel to an otherwise dressed-up look.

For the day, stick to casual layering in knits or rayon to work the winter ensemble. Invest in a printed or bold piece is a great idea as it perfectly offsets solid dresses. An otherwise sleeveless bodycon dress becomes 'winter-friendly' as soon as you throw on this light jacket.

Bomber jackets never go out of style. You can pair them with denims, dresses and skirts too, depending on how formal or casual the occasion is.
