Mumbai Crime: Five women arrested for stealing in Kandivali

The Kandivli police on Friday arrested five women for allegedly stealing 34 cartons containing raw material for dress materials amounting to a total of Rs 25 lakhs from a godown of a garment businessman.


According to the police, the arrested women resided next to the godown. They entered the godown with the help of duplicate keys and had stolen the boxes in the night few days ago.


The incident came into light when the complainant 52-year-old Mahesh Thakkar found that 34 boxes of various sizes were missing. He checked the invoices and asked his employees, but no one was aware about it. On July 18, he approached the police station and registered the complaint.

During inquiry it was revealed that Thakkar had petroleum business along with his garment business in Kandivli area and had taken few godowns on lease on above address where he use to keep his raw materials.

On July 18 while he was checking the stock, he realised that about 34 cartoon of various sizes of ladies Punjabi suits worth around Rs 25.80 lakhs were missing, a police official from Kandivli police station said.

During investigations, the police found out few people who were selling such kind of dress materials. When the police inquired they revealed the accused names on July 21 and subsequently arrested five women residing in nearby area.

They have been identified as Sheela Mishra (50), Renu Trivedi (36), Pratima Tiwari (30), Parmeshwari Pandiyan (23) and Vimla Karkanti (30), all of residents of Balasinor society. All the accused are housewives with no previous criminal record. During interrogation they admitted their crime. The stolen goods are yet to be recovered, the official added.

A relative of one of the accused alleged that, "no good were stolen and it is property dispute between the Thakkar and them. The allegations are fake. We saw Thakkar's people bringing the goods in tempo a from the godown. The arrested women are innocent. One of them is more than 50-year-old, who cannot even walk properly, then how could she steal the boxes from the godown."

When mid-day tried to contact Thakkar, he did not respond.

"We have arrested five women involved in the burglary. They were produced before the Court and were remanded to police custody till Monday. The stolen property is yet to be recovered. Investigation is on", said senior inspector Mukund Pawar from Kandivli police station.
