Throughout her 25-year career, Dutch-born actress Framke Janssen has brought several exciting characters to life on reel. The turning point in her career, she once confessed, was her outing in Pierce Brosnan's first Bond film, GoldenEye (1995) as femme fatale Xenia Onatopp, a role that "put her on the map". Ever since, the 52-year-old has featured in multiple film and television projects, including the X Men series (first in 2000), Star Trek (first in 1992) and a cameo in How To Get Away With Murder (2014).

Framke, who currently headlines The Blacklist: Redemption, a television spin-off of Jon Bokenkamp's successful American crime-thriller Blacklist, says it was the dichotomy of her character, Scottie Hargrave, that inspired her to take up the project. "She [Scottie] is such an interesting woman," she says in an e-mailed interview.

The brilliant and cunning chief of a covert mercenary organisation, Scottie solves problems that are too dangerous for the government. But it is her personal loss that lends fragility to her character. "She has to run the company she used to run with her husband, who she now believes is dead [but isn't]. She also has a son, who went missing when he was three, and that completely damaged her. She doesn't know that her son, who is actually also alive, is hired by her husband to spy on her, in the company. She is strong and vulnerable at the same time. I really wanted to put [that] on screen."

While Framke says she is delighted that her character, introduced in The Blacklist, won sufficient accolades for a spin-off to be green-lit, she admits working for TV has its fair share of challenges. "You don't know the whole character, or the arc up front. It's a little challenging since I have to create a character, only knowing a part of who she is, and then having to find out more about her along with everyone else. So I have been developing her, and sometimes, I don't foresee [how she develops]. I just have to hope that whatever I have been putting into the character actually works."

There has been talk about Scottie's chemistry with her on-screen son, Tom Keen (Ryan Eggold) on the Colors Infinity show with viewers even pointing at an uncanny sexual tension between the two. Does a discussion on this relationship make for conversation with Ryan? "I am happy to have this working relationship with him, so yeah, we discuss the script, characters, all of it. But you have to understand, it goes so fast while you are filming [that] we overlap the last two days of an episode with the first two days of another one. So, generally, we don't have much time to chat or do anything [else], while we are filming. I never have expectations because if you have expectations [about your performance], you set yourself up for failure. The experience is always the most important part to me," she signs off.
