Game review: 'Injustice 2' has best story modes in a one-on-one fighter game

NetherRealm Studios, the guys who make the Injustice and Mortal Kombat games, have just outdone themselves with Injustice 2. It has one of the best story modes in a one-on-one fighter game and does an incredible job of keeping you motivated till the bitter end.

The plot
The story mode starts off with Krypton in the past being destroyed by Brainiac and serves as an introduction to both him and Supergirl. But Brainiac is not the only villain in the game; Superman has gone to the dark side, as he and a few of his super friends go crazy killing bad guys. Long story short, Batman takes down Superman and puts him in jail. Brainiac shows up and the story takes another turn. The great part of the story mode is that you don't really need to know the storyline from the previous game.

The cut-scenes are of very high quality, unexpected of NetherRealm Studios. It's almost like a watching a movie. All the characters are brilliantly designed and, some might say, even resemble the look of some Hollywood actors, but not enough to warrant a lawsuit. The facial animations are the best of any fighting game we have seen till date.

Controls and play modes
The fighting - the bread and butter of NetherRealm Studios - is just perfect. They haven't changed too much from the previous game, and that is a good thing. You can go for simple combos to take down your opponents, or execute slightly tougher combos for better results. Although, defeating opponents in the Very Hard mode requires you to master the controls, and even then it is extremely difficult to win. Mastering of controls can be done in the Tutorial mode. There is also a power bar that can be charged and used for a super attack.

Fighting also lets you collect drop boxes that can be opened up to find gear. Not all boxes are created equal, and the gear you find in them will depend on the colour of the box. Injustice 2 requires you to fight with your favourite character continuously, so their level increases, so they can wear the upgraded gear.

Other than visual appeal, we didn't see the change in stats making a huge difference in the gameplay in the single-player mode. Injustice 2 also features a great multiplayer modes with one-on-one, king of the hill and, of course, the local multiplayer mode, where you can play on the
same screen.

Injustice 2 is a must-have for any respectable collection. NetherRealm Studios have gone above and beyond to make this one of the best fighting games yet. There are some minor bugs, like jerky sound and a slight lag occasionally, but it isn't something a patch can't fix. Superman is incredible as a villain and is such a jerk that it makes it immensely satisfying to take him and his cronies down. If you are a fan of fighting games, this one is worth the asking price.
