Oktoberfest, Germany's gift to beer lovers, comes to Mumbai. The Guide tells you where to tank up on the golden, frothy brew

It started off as a public commemoration of the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen, way back in 1810. Two hundred years later, Oktoberfest has steadily grown into a worldwide celebration of Bavarian culture. This year, the festival officially hits Mumbai shores with the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce, in association with DHL, launching the first ever Mumbai Oktoberfest.

Revellers raise a toast at an Oktoberfest party

Already, a number of restaurants and pubs in the city have begun their own Oktoberfest celebrations. At most places, the focus is on discounts on domestic and international beers. A few are offering speciality Bavarian cuisine as well. But at the Mumbai Oktoberfest, the idea is to give revellers a complete experience. "Since we are organising the event, the authenticity of various elements that make up Oktoberfest, is guaranteed. The band, the beer, the foodu00a0-- all authentically German," says Peter Deubet, Deputy Director General of the Indo German Chamber of Commerce.

A festival tent will be erected at the Turf Club, and the beer garden will welcome thousands of Mumbaikars who crave a taste of Germany. Long benches lined with huge beer mugs, a German band playing traditional music and groups linking arms to sing and dance together will set the mood. "Mumbai Oktoberfest offers a fantastic opportunity for us to bring one of Germany's most famous events to India. The event will showcase a traditional brewery and the band that symbolises this world renowned festival," believes Christoph Remund, CEO, DHL Global Forwarding, India.

On: October 16 and 17, 6 pm onwards at Royal Western India Turf Club, Mahalaxmi. To avoid the rush, reserve your table in advance.
