The 40-year-old building, Sai Darshan, had two wings, hemmed in by shanties. There were some vehicles parked on the premises when the incident occured.

Some residents alleged that the building also housed a materinity home on the first floor as well as the basement, where renovation was underway. They claimed that unplanned repairs were responsible for the cave-in.

Four residents were taken to Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar, where two – Ranjana Shah, 62, and an unidentified woman – were declared dead.

The other two -- Gita, 58, and Varsha, 20 -- sustained multiple minor injuries. They said they were at the maternity home when they noticed cracks on the walls. Minutes later, the building collapsed on them. The hospital has filed a medico-legal case and the two have been kept under observation in the trauma care ward. Anticipating more patients to be rushed to the facility later in the day, hospital authorities summoned all doctors for duty.
