Caught! Cops detain hacker who leaked 100 mn Reliance Jio accounts

A Navi Mumbai police team will take custody of Pintoo Chimpa from Rajasthan, where the local police have tracked him and detained him in connection with the leaking of 100 mn Reliance Jio accounts

Barely a day after a case was registered with the MIDC Rabale police about a data theft of Reliance Jio customers and that it had been put out in the public domain, the police claimed it had cracked the case and detained a 25-year-old in Rajasthan. The Navi Mumbai police is now on its way there to take his custody.

According to a mid-rank official attached to the Rabale police station, the investigation team has zeroed in on a person from Rajasthan for the crucial data theft of Jio consumers. The official added that a team of five police personnel has already left for Churu, a village 300 km away from Jaipur, to take custody of the accused in the case.

Yogendra Faujdar, additional SP from Churu, confirmed that based on information received from the Navi Mumbai police, they have detained one Pintoo Chimpa. "The prime suspect of the data theft case is in our custody. The detained person has been kept under vigil within the additional SP office premises and we are waiting for Navi Mumbai police team to reach here so that he can be handed over to them," Faujdar told mid-day over the phone.

On Monday, a case against a private website was registered with the Rabale police station for putting personal data of the Reliance Jio customers in the public domain. The police then registered a case under sections 389, 43 and 66 of the IT act.

After repeated attempts, Navi Mumbai commissioner of police, Hemant Nagrale, was not available for comment, but joint commissioner of police Prashant Burde said, "We have registered the offence and with help of cyber cell, investigation is underway."

Meanwhile, Tushar Doshi, DCP crime, Navi Mumbai, stated that immediately after the case was registered, the cyber cell was roped in. "With the help of the IP address, the police zeroed in on the prime suspect in the case. Now, only after further investigation can more details emerge," the DCP said.

After repeated attempts, Reliance Jio team was remained unavailable for comment.
