Dubai-based nutritionist and inch-loss expert Rashi Chowdhary’s Protein Bake Shop offers a plethora of snacks, free of gluten, lactose and sugar, to satiate your sweet tooth

Healthy snacks just a click away

Dieticians opine that nutritionally balanced snacks are as important as healthy meals to lose weight and get fit. Taking this thought forward, last year Dubai-based nutritionist and inch loss expert Rashi Chowdhary launched Protein Bake Shop (PBS).

Earlier this year, she followed it up with a website that provides home deliveries. PBS offers snacks, which are free of gluten, lactose and sugar. The website started operations in Mumbai last month.

PBS’s ideology
Chowdhary says, “I’ve seen eight-year-olds diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, young teenage girls struggle with a negative body image due to insulin resistance and adults succumb to yo-yo dieting. Battling with sugar addictions is challenging. PBS’ items are ideal as mid-meal snacks to curb sugar cravings. We have used gluten-free flours and honey.”

Our verdict
We sampled PBS’ Paleo Rawnola, the Peanut Butter Slice and the Paleo Biscotti. The Paleo Rawnola (R500 for 200 gms), made with almonds, cashew nuts, honey, coconut flakes, raisins and super seeds (read flax seeds, sunflower seeds, etc) had the right crunch and sweetness. The honey didn’t make it saccharine sweet unlike breakfast cereals. This makes for a good snack and breakfast option.

The Peanut Butter Slice (R500 for four pieces), made with banana, organic peanut butter, protein powder, honey and chocolate chips, tasted like a banana cake. We didn’t get a hint of the peanut butter. But it had the right amount of honey, which lent sweetness to the slice that was as good as refined sugar. This works in its favour as unsuspecting patrons can indulge in this slice without realising that it’s made with honey.

The Paleo Biscotti (R400 for eight pieces), made with almond flour, coconut flour, honey, almonds and chocolate chips, tasted only of flour. Among the three items we sampled, this is completely avoidable. Overall, PBS has an interesting array of products. But they are strictly meant only for the health-conscious. If you are the kind who lives to eat, then you are better off downing cups of green tea along with low-fat high-fibre biscuits.
