Outsiders criticising govt over Arvind Kejriwal's arrest: Sharad Pawar

The NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar claimed on Friday that the media across the world has taken note of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's arrest, reported the PTI. "It is not good that outsiders are criticising the government. But such a situation was created by the government (itself)," he said in a press conference in Satara district of Maharashtra, as per the PTI. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had on March 21 arrested Kejriwal in the alleged Delhi excise policy-linked scam. He has been remanded in ED's custody till April 1. "What is Arvind Kejriwal's crime? He framed a liquor policy, something that is done by all states. Delhi is the country's capital and its chief minister is arrested," said the 83-year-old NCP founder, the news agency reported on Friday. Sharad Pawar said that a tribal chief minister from Jharkhand has been in jail for the past three months, referring to the arrest of Hemant Soren in a money laundering case. "Just because he (Kejriwal) framed a liquor policy, a chief minister has been arrested and two (of his) ministers are already in jail. If this is not dictatorship then what is it? We have to fight against it," he said, as per the PTI. Sharad Pawar said that all opposition parties will hold a rally at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi on March 31 against Arvind Kejriwal's arrest. The US on Wednesday said it follows "these actions closely, including the arrest of Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal" and stressed that it encourages fair, transparent, timely legal processes and 'we don't think anyone should object to that'. India has termed the remarks 'unwarranted'. On March 23, India had summoned the German deputy chief of mission in Delhi and lodged a strong protest against that country's foreign ministry's remarks on the arrest of the Delhi chief minister. Sharad Pawar said the sitting Satara MP Shrinivas Patil won't contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections 2024 due to health reasons. In the 2019 general elections, Udayanraje Bhosale, a descendant of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, won in Satara on an NCP ticket but later switched over to the BJP, necessitating a bypoll. Bhosale had also won the seat in 2009 and 2014 as an NCP nominee. In that bypoll, Sharad Pawar, who then headed the undivided NCP, fielded Patil and rallied behind him to ensure his victory. Sharad Pawar said on Friday that Patil's replacement would be finalised in a day or two. "Shashikant Shinde, Balasaheb Patil and Sunil Mane's names are being considered," he said. To a question whether former Maharashtra chief minister and Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan would be a candidate for the constituency, Pawar said Satara is an NCP seat and will remain with his party. Replying to a query on the Madha seat in Solapur district of Maharashtra, Sharad Pawar said that he wanted a candidate from the Dhangar (shepherd) community and had spoken to its member and Rashtriya Samaj Party chief Mahadev Jankar. "He too responded but don't know what happened," Sharad Pawar said referring to Mahadev Jankar stating that he would remain with the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance in Maharashtra. The two leaders had met a few days ago, the PTI reported on Friday. Asked about the meeting of the opposition bloc MVA (Maha Vikas Aghadi) in Mumbai on Thursday, Sharad Pawar said that the allies--NCP (SP), Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT) discussed programmes and strategies for their campaign ahead of Lok Sabha elections 2024. "A small committee headed by Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan has been set up to work on a common minimum programme," he said, the news agency reported. Sharad Pawar said he still feels that Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi, led by Prakash Ambedkar, should be a part of the MVA. Elections to Maharashtra's 48 Lok Sabha seats will be held in five phases between April 19 and May 20. (with PTI inputs)

Confrontation mars meeting of Maratha members held to decide candidates

A confrontation broke out between some members of the Maratha community during a meeting organised here to decide candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections 2024 from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district in Maharashtra, the police said, reported the PTI. According to the PTI, the meeting was organised in the wake of Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange's appeal to his community members to decide among themselves persons who could be fielded as candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Manoj Jarange had made the appeal during a meeting held recently at his native Antarwali Sarati village in Jalna district in Maharashtra, as per the PTI. Following his appeal, members of the Maratha community met at the Maratha Mandir in Hudco area of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar city around 11 am. However, when the meeting was on, a quarrel broke out among some coordinators. A video of the incident also went viral, the news agency reported on Friday. The PTI reported, a member later told reporters, "We came here to hold talks. A list of probable candidates for the Lok Sabha polls was supposed to be finalised and sent to Manoj Jarange. But instead of holding talks, a confrontation broke out. Well-established people from the community are doing this." A man from the Maratha community, who was present for the meeting, said, "We have been together since the first silent protest march was taken out under the banner of Maratha Kranti Morcha (in 2016). But now they are asking us who we are. They used swear words, so it led to a quarrel," as per the PTI. When contacted, a senior official of the CIDCO police station said that the situation was under control now and a police team was at the spot. "The quarrel broke out between two individuals and if a complaint is filed in this connection, then we will initiate action," he said, the news agency reported on Friday. Meanwhile, earlier, the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) chief Prakash Ambedkar had held a meeting with Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange over the upcoming Lok Sabha elections 2024 in Maharashtra's Jalna district, the news agency PTI had earlier reported. Lok Sabha elections 2024: BJP's candidate Kangana Ranaut holds roadshow in Mandi

Actor Kangana Ranaut, who is the BJP candidate from Mandi Lok Sabha seat in Himachal Pradesh, held a roadshow in the city to prepare for the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections 2024. The 'Queen' actress was warmly greeted as she waved to the gathered crowd during the event. "You can see the large gathering here. A lot of people have come here. They are all proud that the daughter of Mandi, the nationalist voice from Mandi will represent the constituency in this election," said the BJP Mandi candidate, ahead of her roadshow. "Development is the main issue for BJP. The people of Mandi will show what is in their heart," Kangana added as supporters around her welcomed her with 'Jai Shri Ram' chants. Kangana could be in for a challenge with Congress state President Pratibha Singh saying she is ready to contest from Mandi the seat that she won in a bypoll in 2021. Pratibha Singh on Thursday expressed her willingness to contest against Kangana Ranaut if directed by the top leadership of the Congress. "If they finalise my name, I will go to the field to fight the elections. I have visited almost all areas as an MP in the constituency. It's fine that the BJP has given their candidate. During the meeting yesterday, I was told that I am the best candidate for the party from Mandi, as I had visited all areas of the constituency in Mandi. They have suggested my name and I have told them to take up the matter with High Command, and I will follow the directions of the party leadership" Pratibha Singh said. Himachal Pradesh has four Lok Sabha seats: Hamirpur, Mandi, Shimla, and Kangra. The BJP had won all four seats in 2019. The elections to the four Lok Sabha seats of Himachal Pradesh and bypolls to the six assembly constituencies that fell vacant with the disqualification of six rebel Congress MLAs will be held on June 1. UP court orders judicial probe into Mukhtar Ansari's death

A chief judicial magistrate's court in Uttar Pradesh's Banda on Friday ordered a judicial inquiry into the death of gangster-politician Mukhtar Ansari, a senior official said. Banda Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Bhagwan Das Gupta appointed Garima Singh, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (MP-MLA Court Banda) as the investigating officer in the case, the official said. The CJM has sought the probe report within a month. The 63-year-old Ansari was brought to the Rani Durgavati Medical College in Banda from the district jail in "an unconscious state" on Thursday evening and died at the hospital following a cardiac arrest. Afzal Ansari, who is also the Ghazipur MP, on Tuesday alleged that his brother was given slow poison in jail. "Mukhtar said that he was given a poisonous substance in food in jail. This happened for the second time. Around 40 days ago also he was given poison. And recently, he was again given this (poison) due to which his condition is bad," Afzal Ansari had said. Afzal Ansari had said that during the virtual hearing of a case in a Barabanki court on March 21, Ansari's lawyer had filed an application in the court alleging that his client had been given "slow poison" in jail due to which his condition was deteriorating. Earlier, Ansari was hospitalised for around 14 hours on Tuesday after he complained of abdominal pain. According to the probe order letter, a request was made by the Senior Superintendent, District Jail, Banda on March 28 to nominate an officer for the judicial inquiry into the death of Ansari. Director General of Prisons SN Sabat had earlier told PTI that there will be a judicial inquiry into the matter. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Mahagathbandhan announces seat-sharing for Bihar; RJD to contest 26, Congress 9

The Mahagathbandhan, the opposition coalition in Bihar, on Friday announced that the RJD, its largest constituent, will contest 26, out of the state's 40 Lok Sabha seats. The Congress will contest nine seats, followed by CPI(ML) 3 and CPI and CPI(M) one each. As per the announcement, the Congress has been made to give up the Purnea Lok Sabha seat, which recent entrant Pappu Yadav, husband of Rajya Sabha MP Ranjeet Ranjan, was hoping to contest, claiming that he had received assurance of Congress ticket from Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi. The seat will be contested by RJD, which recently gave the party ticket to JD(U) turncoat Bima Bharti, but stopped short announcing it formally. The Mahagathbandhan's seat-sharing announcement comes a day after the filing of nomination papers for the first phase of Lok Sabha polls was over. The RJD has fielded its candidates in all four seats going to polls in the first phase, in what has been resented by allies as a "unilateral move". The Mahagathbandhan press conference here was scheduled to be addressed by RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, who, however, remained conspicuous by his absence. RJD national spokesman and Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Jha, who spoke at the press conference, said names of candidates would be announced soon in seats where the same has not been done already. Notably, CPI and CPI(M) have already announced their candidates for Begusarai and Khagaria respectively. Jha, who spoke in the presence of state Congress president Akhilesh Prasad Singh and other allies, maintained, "We have arrived at a unanimous decision and we will win". Current parameters to map progress anti-climate: PM Modi tells Bill Gates

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said parameters used to measure progress are detrimental to the climate and suggested developing the concept of a green gross domestic product. In a free-wheeling conversation with philanthropist and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, he also said that climate action has gained momentum since the G20 Summit in India in September last year. When Gates asked if the green approach could be made more affordable for easier adoption, the prime minister said the world needs to adopt a two-pronged strategy: first, nature- and climate-friendly innovation, and second, environmentally friendly lifestyles. The prime minister said, "Our current challenge is how we perceive progress. For example, a country's development is often judged by its steel consumption and energy usage. Based on these criteria, we calculate the country's economy." "If we continue to rely on these parameters, we will consume more electricity and steel, resulting in increased carbon emissions. This means we need to change our mindset. We need to make lifestyle choices and measure progress in ways that are climate-friendly. Currently, all our measures of progress are detrimental to the climate," Modi said. He suggested that the world adopt the concept of Green GDP that would be incorporated into the overall gross domestic product. "We need to change the global terminology," Modi said. The prime minister noted that his and Gates' perspectives on climate change closely align. The philanthropist praised the "Mission Innovation" spearheaded by the prime minister at the 2015 Paris climate meeting. "Mission Innovation", termed by Prime Minister Modi, involves collaboration among 23 countries and the European Commission (on behalf of the European Union) to accelerate the clean energy revolution and progress towards the Paris Agreement goals and pathways to net zero. India is a founding member of "Mission Innovation". The prime minister recalled that he, the then US and French presidents, and Gates had discussed their strategy in depth during that time, but unfortunately, their efforts did not progress significantly. "However, post-G20, an atmosphere has been created where everyone has resolved to fulfil their responsibilities towards the climate. The foundation we laid together with your involvement being instrumental... I am optimistic that these efforts will flourish, much like a banyan tree," Modi said.  This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies.
