India is a safe tourist destination: Chidambaram

Even as the US government issues warnings to its citizens living in India to look out for their safety, the notice has been pooh poohed at the top by the home minister P Chidambaram.

Speaking to reporters in Delhi, Chidambaram said, "India is a completely safe country... India is a safe place, it is safer than any other country in the world. Thousands of tourists come to India and we look forward to welcoming them."

The home minister's comments come in the wake of an urgent 'warden message that was uploaded on Tuesday night. On the US embassy and consulate websites, the cautionary warning read that there was a "a high threat from terrorism throughout India."

'As terror attacks are a serious and growing threat, US citizens are urged to always practice good security, including maintaining a heightened situational awareness and a low profile,' said the statement. Furthermore the note went on to advise Americans that they should vary their routes and times in carrying out their daily activities.

The US Consulate in Mumbai did not offer further comment when contacted.

Meanwhile Americans living in Mumbai were not in a state of panic. "When you see a message like that, it does crack your mind. However I don't think there's a sense of panic or fear yet. In spite of incidents like 26/11, you see the city bounce back and when you walk through the Taj now and go through a four step security check, I actually feel safer," said Elizabeth Flock, an American citizen who's been living in Mumbai for the last nine months now.
