His game, his attitude and his temperament do not give the impression of Shreyas Iyer being a typical T20 player.

He bats in a classical mold and has the making of a great batsman like his mentor at Delhi Daredevils, Rahul Dravid.

Yet, modern day talented batsmen somehow learn to be equally effective in all formats of the game. Just like his 57-ball 96 against Gujarat Lions in Delhi Daredevils’ narrow two-wicket win on Wednesday.

Though Iyer was "very happy" with his knock, he was disappointed that he could not finish off the job, as he fell when DD required seven runs from five balls.

"I wanted to take the team all the way, but somehow I missed the line of the ball. I was indeed disappointed that I missed out on the opportunity to see my team home," Iyer said after the match.

When he was asked if he found it difficult to adapt to the T20 format, he said that the basics of the game remained the same.

"In T20 you have to be watchful for the first few balls and even if you play run-a-ball in the first 30-odd deliveries, there is always scope to improve the scoring rate later. That’s how I planned my innings yesterday. I bide my time," he said.
