Kabir Khan has been credited for bringing out the best in Salman Khan. The actor's portrayal of a good Samaritan in 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' (2015) was a fine performance from a man, who until then was perceived as a superstar apt for harebrained roles. Yet, their collaboration, reveals the filmmaker, wasn't free of obstacles.

Kabir, who reunites with the 51-year-old actor for the third time in the upcoming war-drama, 'Tubelight', says they have their share of creative disagreements while working on a project.

"My equation with Salman wasn't always as great as it is today. It has evolved over the years. We have been working together for six years. During 'Ek Tha Tiger' (2012), our sensibilities weren't matching. He wasn't looking at the film the way I was, but that helped cement our association. Our sensibilities could blend, instead of clash — a formula we used successfully in Bajrangi."

Kabir Khan doesn't negate efforts put in by his leading man. The actor knows his craft, but often withholds himself, Khan says. "In 'Tubelight', he has brought his skills to the fore. People say he is moody or unreasonable. I have never seen that side of him. Yes, he has a strong point of view, and we discuss the smallest of details. But I love these debates because I realise he is right. We don't have stand-offs. One of us always manages to convince the other."

Interestingly, Kabir has found a mentor in the Salman Khan's father, veteran writer Salim Khan. "Once my screenplay is ready, I take it to Salim saab, whether or not my film stars Salman. How many filmmakers have that privilege? Salim saab is a master and picks up nuances. He never nitpicks, but scans for loopholes and makes the screenplay better," he says, adding that while the veteran writer liked 'Tubelight', a few suggestions were incorporated.
