Complete bed rest for a month and a Rs 5,000 medical bill -- that's what a pothole has cost a Kalamboli youth as he broke his right collarbone yesterday after falling into one of the many craters dotting the city this monsoon.

BMS student Saurabh Singh, 19, was on his way back home on his Vespa when the incident took place. After crossing Kharghar, he was riding along below Taloja Bridge on the Sion-Panvel Highway, when the front tyre of his scooter got stuck inside a pothole. While trying to manoeuvre out of the crater, he lost balance and fell down.

A passer-by took Saurabh to the nearest hospital, where he informed his nephew, Deepak Singh, about the incident. Speaking to mid-day, Deepak said, "The entire stretch of road is full of potholes and few of the streetlights are functioning."

After getting him first aid, Deepak shifted Saurabh to Satyam Multispecialty Hospital for further treatment. Deepak said, "Saurabh broke his right collarbone and badly injured his forehead. Fortunately he was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident."

Deepak added that doctors had told them Saurabh would require three months to recover. "He has been advised bed rest for a month and we have already spent R5,000 for his treatment. It's astonishing that the government is doing nothing about the potholes dotting the entire city."
