Bilbao: Real Madrid battled to a 2-1 win at Athletic Bilbao which moved Zinedine Zidane’s men five points clear of Barcelona at the top of La Liga on Saturday.
The visitors welcomed back Gareth Bale from his two-match suspension and, after seeing an early effort from Cristiano Ronaldo ruled out by an offside flag, went ahead in the 24th minute through a neat finish from Karim Benzema.
Athletic, who had previously lost only once at home all season, scored a deserved equaliser through a close-range header from Aritz Aduriz just after the hour.
