NME, Zake, Mooz — these words might sound nonsensical, but they are the names of three of the city's best-known graffiti artists. And this weekend, one of them will show you the ropes and help you on your way to becoming the next Banksy at a workshop organised by Awestrich.

NME, 23-year-old graffiti artist, who prefers to be known by his monicker, has been colouring the streets of Mumbai for the last four years, and thinks of himself as a social warrior. "My art is all about conveying a social message. I was in Madhya Pradesh recently, and there, too, I created art for the empowerment of women, and against female infanticide," he says.

When not a guerilla artist, NME works as a commercial artist, so you're likely to spot his work at restaurants and offices too. He rues the fact that although there is a significantly large community of graffiti artists in Mumbai, most aren't active. He hopes to change this by introducing newbies to the scene at the upcoming workshop.

"I'll teach participants how to create tags [an artist's personal signature], letters, and stencils," says NME, adding that there will also be a short video primer, as not many know about the history of graffiti, and how to go about doing it.

NME's works can be found across the city; his favourite spots to work are in Reay Road, Marol and Bandra West

He will also share tips and tricks that will come in handy if you're just starting out: how to use a spray can, where to source supplies from, and how you should perfect the art of sketching before attempting it on walls. "There is no greater joy than teaching people my art and sharing my skills with them," he says.
