UN is creating the ‘World’s Happiest Playlist’ and has roped in top musicians and other personalities, to show solidarity with the millions suffering around the world.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the world body is “using the universal language of music to show solidarity with the millions of people around the world suffering from poverty, human rights abuses, humanitarian crises and the effects of environmental degradation and climate change.”

Established in 2012 by the UN General Assembly and celebrated from the next year, the International Day of Happiness recognises that the “pursuit of happiness is a fundamental human goal.”

The #HappySoundsLike campaign is led by Cody Simpson, a musician from Texas and has a host of big names from the music industry. The artistes have nominated songs that rouse happy emotions in them (see box).

From India, maestro A R Rahman will be a part of the campaign along with British singer-songwriter James Blunt and Ed Sheeran, among others. Actors Charlize Theron and Michael Douglas, along with UN Messengers of Peace and Goodwill Ambassadors have also been enlisted.

Music fans can also nominate their choice of songs by tweeting with the hashtag #HappySoundsLike. Simpson will choose five songs from fan nominations to be included in the official playlist today. UN has tied up with music streaming service MixRadio for the campaign.
