Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) secretary Sanjay Choupane was killed when the car he was travelling in collided with a bus at Bondla Phata near Aurangabad on Sunday evening. According to the police, the mishap took place when Choupane, along with three others, was heading towards Mumbai after attending a meeting of senior party leader Ghulam Nabi Azad in Aurangabad.

Former Thane city Congress Committee president Balkrishna Purnekar and one Ramakant Mhatre accompanying Choupane were seriously injured in the incident. Police said that the injured are being treated at a hospital in Aurangabad.

The police also added that the accident took place when the car driver lost control after he tried to save one of the motorcyclists, who came suddenly from the wrong side and subsequently the car rammed into the bus.

While Choupane and Purnekar were residents of Thane, Mhatre was a resident of Mumbai.
