Oscillate between two distinct eras woven by the threads of rich language in this enthralling Marathi play
During one of the group readings of classic Marathi plays, director Alok Rajwadi of Pune's Natak Company theatre group stumbled upon Ram Ganesh Gadkari's 'Ekach Pyala' that was written a 100 years ago. "Its rich language had me hooked. Since most of the play is dated, we couldn't do an exact adaptation. But, we did want to look at it from the eye of today's working professional. That's how Sindhu Sudhkar Rum Ani Itar was born and Ashutosh Potdar has written it brilliantly," explains director Rajwadi.
The play debuted in February last year at the Vinod Doshi Memorial Festival and the upcoming show at Sitara would be its 13th stage. It is set in a studio of two costume designers – Rama and Apple – who are asked to make the costumes for a film based on Ekach Pyala. It's about how they approach the script along with Inder, a tailor, Apple's boyfriend, and Shiva, who in fact makes the characters introspect their lives from the standpoint of Ekach Pyala. What's interesting is how the play sways from a period set in 1917 to the current time. "It was exciting to explore two different times in one play," says Rajwadi, who found a challenging and exciting experience.

"We have used several theatrical devices and explored the use of music, set and costume design to help move through the time periods, creating a beautiful mélange," concludes Rajwadi.
