Mumbai Cricket Association managing committee members feel ex-captain is paid too handsomely

Seemingly concerned about the financial health of the association, Mumbai Cricket Association’s (MCA) managing committee members have called for a reduction of Mumbai coach Chandrakant Pandit’s pay packet.

It is learnt that Pandit, who also heads the indoor cricket academy at Bandra Kurla Complex, earns R40 lakh per year for both responsibilities. “The managing committee members thought that the remuneration paid to Chandrakant Pandit for his assignments as Mumbai’s Ranji team coach and Mumbai’s head coach (of the academy) is on the higher side. The members proposed to curtail it to avoid a future financial crisis,” said MCA’s Joint Honorary Secretary Dr Unmesh Khanvilkar.

The MCA is likely to take a decision in their next managing committee meeting which will be held after the Supreme Court verdict on Lodha Commission’s recommendations on how cricket should be run in India.
According to sources, the managing committee has not approved Pandit’s annual deal. Those who oppose Pandit’s dual role (Mumbai coach and academy head) are bringing up the ‘one-man, one-post’ credo.
“We will take a decision about this in our next managing committee meeting. We have also not renewed the contracts of the (Mumbai) team’s support staff,” informed Khanvilkar. Meanwhile, the MCA is keen to rope in a sponsor. “We have received a proposal from one firm which wants to work for us to get sponsors and raise funds for MCA. In exchange, they will get mileage through advertisements at the Wankhede Stadium. After discussing this in the managing committee, we will discuss it with the officials of the firm before presenting a detailed report to MCA,” added Khanvilkar.
