Space crunch is a reality that the Mumbaikar has to deal with every day. Perhaps with this knowledge in the backdrop, CM Devendra Fadnavis and Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray inaugurated a motorcycle ambulance service this week. Designed as an emergency first responder service, the bikes will operate in places that four-wheeler ambulances cannot access.

A medic on bikes isn't a new concept in the city. During the annual Mumbai marathons, a similar service is pressed into action. Nevertheless, it's a welcome addition to the city's medical infrastructure.

Narrow roads are hardly the biggest cause of worry for ambulances. The medics need to brave filth-choked lanes full of potholes, thoughtlessly parked cars, mindless gatherings, and more. Meanwhile, the kin of a patient are forced to watch the clock tick helplessly, as they wait for help to arrive.

While two-wheeler ambulances are a definite step up in meeting some of these hurdles, we should never take our foot off the pedal when it comes to improving awareness about ambulance etiquette.

How many times have we helplessly witnessed an ambulance's siren wailing as if pleading for a way out of a snarl? While some times, there is no place for the motorists around the ambulance to move, it's also true that we live among some insensitive and/or perhaps ignorant people who refuse to give way, costing precious time that might be the difference between life and death.

Over the last year, we have come across several green corridors. But that is a special ambulance service that requires the government's permission. Since not every person can afford that, let's try and ensure that those who are battling for their lives, are not forced to fight traffic as well.
