While many senior singers blame changing trends and musical tastes for losing out on playback offers in films, Mika Singh defies the rationale.

The pop star has never run out of playback offers. His latest is Whats Up from Anushka Sharma's Phillauri and he says he had a great time working with her.

"I was happy when Anushka approached me for the song. I sang 440 Volt for her and Salman bhai's Sultan (2016), which was a hit. This is my second song with Anushka and it's doing well. I feel she is my new lucky charm. She is hugely talented and knows her trade well. Her inputs for the song were valuable."

Young guns
Calling Whats Up this year's first wedding track, Mika is all praise for composer Jasleen Royal. "She is fairly new, but talented. I enjoyed working with her."

Mika is particularly excited about Phillauri since it stars fellow Punjabi, actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh. "He is like my younger brother. I have always supported new artistes from Punjab. I want to support and promote them in Bollywood, the way I did for Honey Singh and Master Saleem," says Mika, adding that his new music company, Music & Sound, will work towards promoting new talent.

Without divulging details, Mika shares that he is currently working on a few international projects. "Most singers say they're doing songs with international artistes, but you never see them together. (But) I have a surprise in store."

Balancing act
While Bollywood has seen many singers fade into oblivion, given changing tastes and sensibilities, what makes Mika tick? "Those singers sing romantic numbers. They all are wonderful artistes. Luckily, I don't sing romantic tracks. My songs are not based on situations. Tracks like Sawan Mei Lag Gayi Aag (1998), Ganpat (2007), Mauja Hi Mauja (2007) and 440 Volt (2016) are promotional numbers that have heir own identity. Besides, I keep doing non-film songs like Dama Dum Mast Kalandar and Billo. Usually, singers, who come to Bollywood from the independent music space, get stuck here. But my focus is on films as well as independent music," Mika signs off.
