Cathedral and John Connon (Fort) have gone about with their title defence the right way. The Mumbai Schools Sports Association (MSSA) U-16 girls inter-school football champions of 2015 once again reached the finals by beating Smt RSB Arya Vidya Mandir (AVM) (Juhu) 5-0 at Cooperage ground yesterday. Devangi Maheshwari scored a brace.

The scoreline may suggest it was a rout, but it was anything but that as AVM played admirably, creating many chances. Despite Cathedral taking the lead in the very first minute through captain Shamika Bhandarkar's loopy effort, AVM pushed the defending champions on the backfoot creating chances, but to no avail. Cathedral's Devangi Maheshwari punished the Juhu outfit soon after with a sweet right foot strike.

AVM, despite their attacking prowess, left a big gap between defence and attack which Cathedral regularly exploited and got two more goals from Muskaan Mehra and Avanti Singh. AVM even got a penalty but outfielder Muskaan, who went in goal, brilliantly beated out the following effort. Devangi put the final nail in the coffin in the dying seconds when her intended cross found the back of the net.

Devangi was elated having reached the final once again and said she wants to win it once more as most of them will pass out from school. "Today's match turned out to be a lot better than we expected. I feel exhilarated reaching the final again. We want to win it again as most of us are in the tenth grade and will pass out soon," Devangi told mid-day yesterday. Cathedral have now reached three consecutive finals, and coach Deepak Narwade believes it is due to regular training and the team playing together since a long time
