Mumbai: 20-year-old runs BMW over scrap collector in Malad

The college student was arrested after racing in the BMW and hitting the scrap collector as he was crossing the road in Malad; the victim died on the spot

A 20-year-old college student who was racing and showing off his BMW to his friends, ended up running over and killing a scrap collector in Malad.

The 28-year-old victim died on the spot and is yet to be identified.


The car was being driven by Siddharth Vijan, the son of a textile businessman, Rajkumar Vijan.

The youth is a third-year BMS student of Rutambra College and was in the car with around four to five of his friends.

Around 3.40 pm last afternoon, he was driving on the road behind Mindspace, in the Chincholi Bandar area. The victim was there to collect scrap from the dumper vehicles parked on the road, and was crossing the road when the car hit him.

Such was the impact from the speeding car that the victim was thrown into the air, after which he came crashing down on the bonnet of the BMW.

Passers-by took him to Siddharth hospital, but he had already passed away. Meanwhile, the police also took the accused to the hospital as he had also received injuries. After receiving treatment, the accused was taken for medical tests to gauge his blood alcohol level. The youth is currently in police custody and will be produced in court today.

“We have registered the case with under Sections 304a, 279 and 338 of the IPC. The deceased is yet to be identified. We know he is around 28 years old and has a tattoo on his right forearm with the name Krishna,” said Police Inspector Deepak Phatangde of Bangurnagar police station, adding that the body has been sent for post-mortem.
