In the wake of massive traffic snarls in the area, the BMC has proposed to complete the road widening work on the Kurla-Kalina bridge over the Mithi river. It's a significant move as the bridge, a vital link between Santacruz East and Kurla West, is used by thousands of commuters daily. The road widening project was halted three years ago after the contractors failed to meet the delivery deadlines, after several time extensions.

According to sources at the BMC, the project is estimated to cost R10.57 crore. Authorities plan to complete the project within 19 months. A senior civic officer from bridge department said, "We have floated tenders for the proposed work. The Kurla-Kalina bridge area is a busy traffic junction. Once widened, it will benefit hundreds of commuters who use that stretch to commute between east and west Mumbai."

The officials, however, are afraid that they would face several hurdles in rerouting the traffic while the widening work is underway. "We will seek the help of the traffic department to ensure minimum inconvenience to commuters," the officer said. Another BMC official said, "When we take up the widening work again, we plan to shut the bridge near the near Kalpana Air India Colony. We may need to dismantle the entire bridge to widen it."
