In a bizarre incident, the police are on the hunt for two men who kidnapped a 39-year-old man and members of his family outside the sessions court in South Mumbai, extorted them and let dropped them off outside a poice station.

According to reports by the Indian Express, the incident occurred on May 8th when Doctor Haroon Khan and members of his family went to Bombay City Civil and Sessions Court, Kala Ghoda to file for anticipatory bail. They were named in an FIR for an assault case that was filed in Ghatkopar Police station.

Just as the two men were about the enter the sessions court, two men, posing as policemen asked the family to accompany them. In a statement, an officer from the Colaba Police station said, "The Khans were ordered to sit in a Maruti Swift car and driven away from the court. They were assaulted en route and threatened with a pistol."

The suspects demanded Rs 1 lakh as ransom in order to let the Khan’s go. Haroon was carrying the bail amount and handed it over to the accused.  The official added, "The suspects drove the Khans to Ghatkopar police station, dropped them there and fled from the spot."

Once, the initial shock wore off, Khan complained about being forcibly being transported there at gun point and having to pay 1lakh to be released. The police then enquired about the incident and asked them to file a complaint at the Colaba police station since it had taken place in their jurisdiction.

The Ghatkpar police have confirmed that the men in the extortion and kidnapping of the Khans were not Police employees. Earlier this week, the Colaba police have booked two men for impersonating a public servant, kidnap, wrongful confinement and extortion, no arrests have been made
