Mumbai crime: Man in trouble for making lewd comments on WhatsApp

You need to be careful about what you say on WhatsApp. Chhotu, a Ghatkopar resident, learnt this lesson the hard way when he passed a lewd comment on photographs of a girl sent to him by a friend on the messaging app. Soon after he did this, he got a call from the Dombivli GRP, who are on the verge of booking him on the charge of obscenity.

Kiran Thosar (28), a friend of Chhotu, had boarded a CST UP local train on Thursday from Ambernath. A 16-year-old girl got into the same second-class compartment with her mother from Vitthalwadi station, two stops later. When the train crossed Kalyan, Thosar began clicking photographs of the girl and he sent them via WhatsApp to two male friends and a female friend. The girl realised that something was wrong and immediately informed her mother about it.

“The girl was going shopping with her mother,” said Mahesh Bagwe, senior police inspector of Dombivli GRP. “When the girl told her mother what Thosar was doing, she snatched Thosar’s phone and found that he had clicked the girl’s photographs and sent it to three of his friends, one of whom — Chhotu — had made a lewd comment.”

Other people in the compartment beat up Thosar and handed him over to the Dombivli GRP. Thosar, a resident of LBS Marg, Ghatkopar (West) who works as an engineer in a company in Ambernath, was arrested and booked under Section 509 (Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman).

“We are yet to book Thosar under the IT Act and will do so with legal assistance. We are also thinking of booking the friend, Chhotu, who made the lewd comment on the girl’s photographs,” added Bagwe.
