This diarist has a confession to make. Rarely have we been hooked while reading a book on Indian advertising such that we lapped it up from cover to cover in a few hours.

Go East Indian
Here’s some good news for gourmands keen on East Indian fare. While Meldan D’Cunha, chef-owner of Bandra’s Soul Fry is paying tribute to them with a week-long food festival that begins today, another Bandra eatery will launch a special East Indian menu.
The Bagel Shop, which reopened a few days back, will offer a special East Indian menu, in addition to the bagel one, from June 10. It will feature Mutton Khuddi, Fugias, Wedding Rice and Pickled Chicken. “Born and brought up in Bandra, I wanted to create a menu that represented this community, and especially this suburb,” says owner Anil Kably.
Helmed by chef Lester Pereira (Bandra boy again), the dishes are created from traditional recipes passed on in his family. Post the launch, guests can also buy the quintessential East Indian Bottle Masala.
Shades of Jade
There’s a new design space in town for to-be brides to indulge in extravagance. And that would be stating the obvious, rather mildly. Located in Lower Parel, the opulent studio houses designers Monica and Karishma’s new bridal collection.
Models dressed in three different looks for pheras, sangeet ceremony and evening reception sauntered by. Well, going by the lines we saw, this might give you a few reasons to get hitched. Just a thought.

Women on top
It’s good to see an initiative to make the city’s workspaces safer for women. A panel organised by ASIS, a world organisation for security professionals, hopes to address issues faced by women employees, and how corporate houses can help create an inclusive space. The event, to be held today, will include experts from UN-awarded NGOs, women lawyers, corporate women trainers and Mumbai Police officials. Sagarika Chakraborty, who chairs the Women in Security domain in the Mumbai ASIS Chapters, said, “The idea is to ensure that women in the workforce are encouraged to be more active and employers go beyond the call of duty.”
Raise the bar
Many argue that Mumbai doesn’t have a buzzing nightlife, what with the midnight deadline. But, life would be extremely boring without a party, as actor Arjun Rampal put it at the launch of two-day event called India Nightlife Convention and Awards set to kick off on July 17.

One of our favourite restaurateurs, Riyaaz Amlani in his capacity as National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) president, brings the hospitality industry on one platform to support the awards conceptualised by Aman Anand of Kickstart Entertainment. And, there’s never a dull moment in the company of Amlani’s wisecracks.
AD Singh was also in a jovial mood. “So this is how you people look like before sundown?” he told the crowd which included the biggies from the restaurant industry. The advisory board for the awards includes Singh, Riyaaz Amlani, Dilip Joshi, David DeSouza of Goa’s best landmark, Tito’s, Jay Maithani and Kishore DF.
“The idea is to bring the industry’s contribution to the attention of the government, put forward the plight of bar operators, and recognise leadership in the nightlife business, including musicians and artists who bring in the crowd,” said Amlani. The jury of nearly 100 members will be chosen from eight cities. Public polls will be carried out for categories such as Bar of the Year and DJ of the Year. The two-day convention will conduct workshops, and mentorship programmes while the big-ticket award’s nite will be held on the second night.
