Fashion and feminism
Last Friday, The Ladies Finger and Godrej India Culture Lab collaborated with an upcoming fashion week for an event, titled Feminism and Fashion — Navigating a Knotty Terrain. The discussion centred on feminism and fashion and explored the changes in the fashion world as it becomes more conscious of feminist issues. Some of the most well-known women in the country, across professions and interests, were in attendance. The power-packed panel itself was a veritable who’s who — spoken word artist Sharanya Manivannan, fashion designer Anita Dongre, Instagram sensation Mallika Dua, craft revivalist Laila Tyabji and The Ladies’ Finger founder, Nisha Susan, who was moderator for the evening. The discussion was followed by an art exhibit in which fashion stylist and blogger Pallavi Datta re-imagined women characters from Premchand’s work.

We’ve come to enjoy the Lab’s interesting Friday Fundas sessions, and this one was no exception.

MAMI tribute
The campaign to register for this year’s Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI), JioMAMI Mumbai Film Festival has gained considerable creative steam with a micro-tribute to cinema in the promotional video scripted by Varun Grover, directed by Vasan Bala and narrated by Farhan Akhtar. The greats of world and Indian cinema, and the power of the silver screen find mention in this tribute. The video tells the story of cinema through the reactions from faces captured by the medium, the rise and fall of emotions and even the ubiquitous popcorn. In other MAMI news, registrations are open for the film festival. Follow all the mayhem on their Snapchat ID, @mumbaifilmfest.

The Kashmir effect
The recent turmoil in Kashmir has had its effect on other parts of the country too, be it the sedition charge on Amnesty or the experience of Kashmiri rapper, MC Kash at an event in Bengaluru. He narrated the unpleasant experience on a widely-shared post on Facebook. “My performance was scheduled for 8 PM and even though the event was running a bit late I was categorically stopped from entering the auditorium by the Bangalore Police, whose three-starred officers surrounded me and threatened me with jail if they or the Pundits present in the crowd found my lyrics anti-national,” he wrote. He mentioned that when there were some slogans raised after the police ordered the sound to be cut off, he was threatened with imprisonment and was also heckled. The post leaves us wondering what led the police to act the way they did and if they are now taking offense on behalf of others.

A new chapter for Dhingra
There’s something baking in Pooja Dhingra’s Le15 kitchen and no, it’s not those flaky, heavenly sweet and colourful macarons. After her debut as an author with The Big Book Of Treats in 2014, Dhingra is working on her next title, to be released by Hachette India early next year. While we’re yet to know more about its contents, we’ve been drooling over a few photographs from the book that she has uploaded on social media. They’ve been clicked by her friend and Jaffa-based food photographer Daniel Shechter. While at it, a collaboration with visual artist (or the “magic man” as she call him), Sameer Kulavoor for a series of minimalist, colourful designs for Le15 is also currently underway.

Pulling a rabbit out of a hat
It is one of the most difficult plays for an actor to perform. You walk onto the stage and are handed a script in a sealed envelope. You then have to perform what’s written in it. Written by Iranian playwright Nassim Soleimanpour, White Rabbit Red Rabbit is a solo show and live theatre at its best. Last week, Mumbai was privy to a few classic performances of the play. On Tuesday, Richa Chadha returned to the stage after two years to perform at a sold-out show at Prithvi Theatre. Her act was followed by actor Sohrab Ardeshir. On Saturday, it was our favourite comedian Anuvab Pal at Canvas Laugh Club. If you missed last week’s shows, this week you can head to The Hive to watch Warren D’sylva, Meher Acharia Dar and Divya Bhatia enact the play.
