The city - sliced, diced and served with a dash of sauce

Mumbai Diary: Thursday Dossier

Dharavi on an e-market roll
To hone the skills of the thousands of craftsmen who make Dharavi the entrepreneurial hub that it is, and generate more jobs in the community, the online start-up DharaviMarket.com was launched two years ago. As part of a new initiative, the start-up has recently launched an innovative crowdfunding campaign. They are calling on students and anyone interested to pitch products made in the slum to stores in their neighbourhood to expand the reach of the products. As a reward, those who sign up for this also get a chance to earn commission on sales if the shopkeeper stocks or buys the products. Feel like becoming a social entrepreneur? You can find the campaign on Impact Guru.

Smells like Delhi
Who wouldn't like to read a book that's packed with nostalgia and recipes? Through her new book — Jasmine and Jinns — author and columnist Sadia Dehlvi is all set to take readers on a walk through the Delhi she recalls in her growing-up years. Going by a sneak peek we were privy to, the book is a visual treat as the writer takes you inside her home and the kitchens of other Dilliwallahs, while she recalls conversations and recipes of many classic dishes including biryani, korma, kofta, Shami kebab and kheer. The tour doesn't end there; the next stop is the famous by-lanes of the old city as Dehlvi shows you where to tuck into the best jalebi, dal bhaji, aloo poori, dahi bhalla, nihari and mithai. In her narrative and the photographs that accompany her words, watch the city come alive in all its magical complexity.

Cut to fit
MNS chief Raj Thackeray was greeted by a selfe-seeking crowd as he arrived in Vikhroli to address party workers last afternoon.

If looks could kill
Only a few days ago, actor R Madhavan's selfie was taking the Internet by storm. And before the Twitteratti could recover from all the hotness, Milind Soman dropped this bomb. The model recently shot for the cover of a magazine, and this photograph, for obvious reasons, made the cut.

Soman may have salt and pepper hair now, which he rightly chooses to flaunt. But that's where all signs of his age - he is 51 - end. This diarist recalls an anecdote a colleague, who was covering the Mumbai marathon, shared. "Milind was looking for a cab after the run got over, but when he couldn't find one, he decided to run home, all the way from town to Shivaji Park!" That explains it.

Sip on a good cause
Get set to gulp your cocktail down the next time you drop by The Daily Bar & Kitchen in Bandra. The hip watering hole recently launched the 'Refuse the Straw' campaign to eradicate the use of the polypropylene plastic, which breaks down into tiny toxic parts in 200 years, causing environmental damage. They will not be giving out straws unless the customers ask for it. "We hope to create awareness about our environment. A straw, though small, has the ability to hurt marine life as well; better things come with little sacrifices," reasons Dishant Pritamani, founder of the restaurant. Raise your glasses, minus the straws.

Jim Sarbh and the art of playing guest curator
He may have chosen a different art form as his profession, but hailing from the family of one of India's pioneering art gallerists has left its mark on him. In an interesting move, Jim Sarbh has taken over Pundole's Instagram account for a week, where, since Monday, the actor has been posting artworks that he enjoys.

Aligned with his choice of art and photography matched to music, Sarbh has posted eminent French artist Yves Klein's creation Leap into the Void (facing picture, left), matched to Smokey Joe's La La by Googie Rene, and New York-based artist Aaron Tsuru's work (right), set to If You Want to Sing Out by Cat Stevens. Now we know how, thanks to his eclectic tastes, the actor brings so much diversity to his roles.
