Spend your Sunday swapping tomes with strangers at a meet-up that works just like speed dating

You might be familiar with the concept of speed dating, where you chat with a stranger for a few minutes over a glass of wine, and, at the tinkle of a bell, move on to the next table. At the end of it, you exchange numbers with anyone you found interesting. But, how about an event where, instead of swapping numbers, you actually swap books?

Say hello to Sip and Swap, which lets you do exactly that. The second edition of the event, started in Mulund this January by 24-year-old Priyesh Thakkar, will be held this weekend at a Chembur restaurant. "Each pair gets five minutes at the table, where you can pitch your book to your partner. If you like each other's books, you swap, and if not, you switch till you find the right book," explains Thakkar.

"You don't even have to be an avid reader to attend.

All you have to do is get that one book you wish to recommend to others," he adds.

In addition to swapping books, attendees will also be treated to a short film screening. Thakkar plans on having the event at a different location each time - with Bandra being next - so there's always a fresh batch of people.

He adds that kick-starting a conversation with books is a great way to segue into other topics. "It might lead you to finding something else in common with the person you're paired with. The goal is to get people to go offline and socialise with others."
