This weekend, you can savour a spread of authentic Naga dishes at Eats and Beats, an event organised by the Mumbai chapter of the non-profit Naga Christian Fellow-ship (NCF).

The group is made up of Nagas (comprising several tribes native to parts of northeast India and Myanmar) who have moved to the city for work or higher studies, and this event is a way of bringing the community together. The funds raised through this event will go towards an annual camp that the NCF conducts in Lonavala.

"Although Eats and Beats is organised by the community, it is open to all. We will be serving dishes made by Naga families and students based in Mumbai," says Edward Odyuo, secretary of NCF Mumbai.

On offer will be vegetarian and non-vegetarian options like kholar (kidney beans) gravy, and singju, a dish made with cabbage, sesame seeds, yellow peas, banana flower, king chilli, fermented fish and fenugreek leaves. "Nagas prefer eating rice over chapatis. The rice will be served with pork with bamboo shoot, and chicken cooked in spices from back home. We will also be serving eromba, a type of chutney, as an accompaniment," says Odyuo.

"The ingredients used in Naga cooking are not easily available in markets here, but there are a few shops in and around Kalina that stock them," he shares, adding that on the day, there will also be kiosks selling pickles and chutneys sourced from the northeast.

To keep kids and other attendees entertained and engaged, NCF will be setting up game stalls and photo booths, too.
