Poetry, Lower Parel (Indoors)
There is nothing cooler for a family, who is fed on stories, than to actually have a story on a plate. So, when we learnt that Poetry in Kamala Mills has recently added a Story On a Plate section on its menu for kids, how could we resist?

It is nearly 6 pm when we walk in and except for a couple of office goers, all is quiet in the café-patisserie. We look at the menu, enthralled by the story of how Poetry came to be, and then check out all the Keto and vegan fare that the restaurant offers. I have to explain to my kids, 12-year-old Vani and 10-year-old Ammol, that Keto is short for ketogenic - a high-fat, adequate-protein, low-carb diet that helps burn fats rather than carbs. Apparently, Keto diet is recommended for kids who have difficult-to-control (refractory) epilepsy.

We start off by ordering Beat the Heat (Rs 150), a mocktail of pomegranate, pineapple and apple juice. The drink is cooling, unsweetened and refreshing. The kids ask for Oreo Cookies and Cream Milkshake (Rs 230). Not too sweet, it is topped with fresh cream and chopped cookies, yet light enough for them to have another. The Story on a Plate has a handful of creations crafted for kids and we want to try them all. Ammol picks Hello Kitty Hummus (Rs 480) while Vani chooses to have the Chicken Parmigianna with Sticky Rice (Rs 800) that is presented as a Snow White story. Lo and behold, we have the Evil Queen on our plate.

And is she to die for! The chicken is tender and juicy, and Vani's eyes widen as she tastes it. Ten on ten, she says and Ammol concurs. The Hello Kitty plate made of hummus is good; the salad on the side with the green and black olives is fresh and lovely. Next comes the Corn On The Cob in the form of the three minions (Rs 420). Bob, Kevin and Stuart are lightly steamed and garnished with cheese, olives and caramelised onions. We also try Garlic Basil Chicken (Rs 440), a Keto dish, which is delicately flavoured and tender.

The desserts are tempting too, but the kids are stuffed. We settle for a slice of their popular red velvet cheesecake (Rs 160) and Vani, our in-house baker, nods in approval. There are books, a lovely collection of poetry and great music. Would we travel from afar to eat these dishes? Perhaps not. But if we are in Kamala Mills, we would drop by for another round of storytelling.
