Duo arrested for duping flat buyers of 87 lakhs in Mumbai

The Amboli police on Monday arrested two persons duping various people of at least Rs 87 lakhs from various flat buyers from Mumbai afetr a 36-year-old woman lodged a complaint.


The modus operandi was to collect money from from flat buyers after promising them to get flat at prime locations in Mumbai at less than market rate. The two provided the victims with fake flat allotment letter on Mhada's letter head.

The duo, identified as Sushant Bhavangiri (34) and Deepak Tiwari (34) were arrested after 40 days. The 36-year-old named Preeti Singh lodged a complaint against them for duping her of Rs 30 lakhs.

Preeti Singh, a resident of Andheri was promised a flat in Mhada construction at a prime in Vile Parle. Singh was lured with a prospect of getting a Mhada flat in Vile Parle in 2015. However such a project never existed. According to a report in Times Of India, Singh said, "I was searching for flat when I learnt from my friends that the duo are real estate agents and can help in finding flats at cheaper rate. I paid Rs 30 lakhs in 20 instalment. Finally when I asked for the flat possession they gave the allotment letter which turned out fake when I checked with the authority when I did not find any such project that the accused mentioned at Vile Parle."

During investigations it was also found out that the duo had conned four others.

Singh filed a complaint on May 31 and based on it, the Amboli Police arrested Tiwari from Jogeshwari and Bhavangiri from his Andheri residence.

The duo has been booked under the Indian Penal Code sections 34 (common intention), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 465 (forgery), 467 (forgery of valuable security) and 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating). They are in police custody till July 12.
